How To Pose Like A Fashion Blogger & Increase Your Instagram Following
By Shana Lynn Yao
Fashion bloggers. They seem to rule Instagram with their hundreds of thousands to even millions of followers. They post a photo and thousands of loyal followers respond with comments. And whether not you are a fashion blogger - if you're a female entrepreneur trying to figure out your Instagram strategy to grow your following, listen up.
The truth is, there are many ways to approach your Instagram strategy. And in fact, as a Business Strategist, I would like to divide it into two categories - one being all business, trying to beat the Instagram algorithm using time consuming methods, trying to do what everyone else is doing, and spending all day on Instagram trying to get people to see you and like you - OR you can do it the FUN way, literally manifest more followers and accidentally start living your best life.
So if you are in the first camp of business owners just stop reading. Really. This article is NOT for you.
BUT... if you're totally into laughing your way to manifesting your best business friends and Instagram followers, get ready! You just need your phone or DSLR camera, your sense of humor, and the guts to become better at being you.
What Fashion Bloggers Know That You Don't
Have you ever wondered what makes fashion bloggers photos so intriguing? Why their feeds seem to be so alive?
Well, I'm here to tell you, it's because their showing their LIFE. It's the girl in motion, in real life but captured in a pretty photo. What a concept, on one of the most powerful photo sharing social media apps - Instagram - right?
Whether or not you are a fashion blogger - you're a lifestyle blogger, a health coach, a life coach, a consultant or have an MLM business - if you're on Instagram and have women customers and clients, posing like a fashion blogger is a strategy you may just want to try.
5 Fashion Blogger Poses To Try
1. CLOTHES IN MOTION POSE
MOVE IT. I know - wow - what an amazing photo concept. Captured in motion is one of the best ways to make sure your Instagram feed attracts more like minded followers and comments.
On Instagram and any social media app that feeds on great photos and videos, your goal is to translate the emotion, values, and beliefs of your brand through the magic of photos. And not only is the clothes in motion pose fun, it's engaging.
How do you do it when it's just you and your phone?
This is part of the magic. One of the strangest things about us humans is how we see others so different than ourselves. The truth is, seeing people with full body shots - let alone in movement - makes our human brains go nuts. We are astounded by these magazine like photos and never consider how we, our humble selves could also look so lively and amazing in photos.
So I'll share a little trick. It's called getting over yourself. Yes, you know how I said in the beginning you needed guts? Yes, you need some guts as I had the day the above photo was taken by my neighbor.
Don't get me wrong - it's embarrassing. Just the other day one of my neighbors said "I've been noticing you're taking a lot of selfies lately." So I look a little vein. But that vanity has garnered me clear skin, and over 6000 new followers in 45 days. I'd say a little vanity and a moment of embarrassment is well worth it.
2. THE MIRROR SELFIE POSE
Ok, you don't have to depend on other people to get your full body shots. Hence, the mirror selfie pose. It works best in a large, full length mirror with good lighting (some hacks coming soon on if you're lighting is less than optimal).
The purpose of this shot is to actually show your real life. Expose your phone or camera, and either pose with the "duck face" (see below) or give a pouty, shy glance. The idea is to stand with one foot in front of the other (it elongates your body) and (duh) use the mirror to make sure you look great.
Snap a few photos so you can have a few to choose from for editing.
3. THE DUCK FACE SELFIE #kisskiss
What? You haven't done the "duck face" yet? It's the fashion blogger/selfie go to. For some reason, everyone looks better when they are in kissing mode. Named after Daffy himself, this pose requires you get a little sassy with yourself and act as if you want to give yo'self a big lip smack.
Duck face poses can often be accompanied by #mwah #kiss #loveyou hashtags to increase your reach.
4. THE LAID BACK "I HAVE A VISION" POSE
The "Laid back vision" pose is a fashion blogger MUST. It's the best way they show their entire outfit, and again, as I said in #1, we humans are astounded by the idea of seeing people who aren't looking at the camera with a body shot.
One of my favorite fashion bloggers - Danielle Bernstein of @weworewhat is a master of this look. A former street style photographer, she has the look-of-the-future down pat.
Obviously, the best way to do this is to have someone take a photo of you. It's best done outside, so it looks like you're in your daily life just "hangin'". BUT you don't need anyone! I took the photo on the right at the dog park. Always be on the lookout for a ledge or area where you can stand your phone up straight (I didn't bring a tripod... I mean, I was at the dog park) - but ledges work great. Then if you have an iphone 6 or up, it has a timer function on the photos. Just set the timer and look off into the distance. Be sure to take several photos (it's hard to capture the right "I'm not looking" shot.
5. THE TRENDING BAMBI POSE
Every so often, a new trend comes out, and fashion bloggers in the know catch on and spread the excitement. The Bambi pose, popularized by Bella Hadid herself is now the pose of the moment.
As recently quoted from a recent article in Who What Wear, "As a gamut of influencers and fashion girls have demonstrated on their profiles, the Bambi pose is best accompanied by an arched back and sometimes even taken up a notch with a playful hand gesture or even a hair flip."
What it really entails, is sitting in a fun and playful way, thighs over your calves, arching your back a bit, and either pouting or laughing (personally, I couldn't help but laugh when I was trying to mimic the pose at home).
What this pose does is add angles to your feed. AND, as mentioned in #1, posing in a fun, and playful way in photos is another thing that astounds our stuck, human brains. It catches peoples attentions and as your potential followers pass by your feed, they are sure to love and comment on this "wish I were there" look.
Why You Want To Do This
And that's it! Why should you consider trying some of these poses out yourself? Well, personally, it's FUN. I had so much fun making my Instagram one I would follow myself - and ended up growing my following over 6000 people in just 45 days.
The truth is, if you are marketing to women, we're W-O-M-E-N (hear me roar). Women - amazing creatures we are. :) We are attracted to attractive things. We want to look good (remember, it's NOT vein to want to look good, it's CONFIDENT), and we dress (you know you do) for yourself AND other women.
To market to women you have to think like a woman. Your job as a business owner or blogger is NOT to sell your product or service 24/7. It's to attract people who "get" you. Who like who you appear to be. Like what you like (for me - dogs, fashion, health, style) and to RESPOND and ENGAGE with you. And occasionally you remind them what you do.
As NY TImes best selling author Dan Pink said,
We are all human. Marketing is about understanding the person you are marketing to so much so that your product or service sells itself.
So I want to hear - what fashion blogger poses are you going to start doing today? It's time to grow your following and influence - the FUN way. Tell me below in the comments and tag me in your next photo!
